When visiting a new city, how does one get info on the high crime areas in advance, so as to plan hotel stays?

I don't want my family and I to book a hotel in a drug infested, high crime community. All the economy hotels online look great, by their picture alone, and you can't go by that. When visiting a new city, how does one get info on the high crime areas in advance, so as to plan hotel stays?
Call the city's Chamber of Commerce or Visitor Info Center (most major cities and ';tourist'; towns have one...).

Or call the non-emergency number for the local police station. I know its an odd question to ask them. But, I've done this when moving to a new neighborhood and the police can be very helpful.
