Can you use a debit card for a hotel stay?

Do you need a credit card for a hotel stay? I have a debit card but do you need a credit card because its a determined amount alloted to you?Can you use a debit card for a hotel stay?
It depends on the hotel. Most of them would accept a debit card but you want to check before you get there. Can you use a debit card for a hotel stay?
Yes, you can use a debit card. When travel with friends, I confirm the reservation with the debit card and when we get to the hotel we all pay our portion in cash. Also, I never use the debit card that is attached to your bank account. If one of your friends causes some damage they will charge your bank account immediately. I always use my Greendot card, so they just can't charge for anything after you check out and you are 200 miles away. That way it forces them to prove up the charges. I was charged for a bunch of local calls ( which were supposed to be free) but I used the Greendot card and there was only enough on there to cover the room so the extra chagres were declined and they had to answer to the bank about what they were charging. So, take that Ramada Inn.
Most hotels prefer a credit card so they can hold authorization in the event that you bail before paying. If you only have a debit card they'll probably ask you for a cash deposit.
I have used a debit card to book hotels even online but when I arrived they ask for a credit card to swipe or you have to pay in full but you can pay in full with your debit card ...thats in Ireland anyway ?
no only credit card to secure damages or un paid bills you may have incurred
